Glenpark XI soundly beaten in Western Cup opener

Meikleriggs XI v Glenpark XI

It was a woeful Western Cup start for Glenpark as they travelled to Paisley on Thursday evening to meet Meikleriggs in the first sectional match of the new-look format for the Cup.

Glenpark bowled first with Dave Sharma and Mark Robertson opening. Unfortunately Mark struggled to find his length and went for an expensive first couple of overs. Dave fared better at the other end, taking an early wicket and frequently finding the outside edge to keep third man busy. When one nick finally went to keeper Neil Flack he was unable to hang on to it, proving a costly error as the second wicket pair put on over a hundred. John MacNab showed he not lost touch after sitting out last season, bowling tidily for his four overs. Jeeta Singh and Sam Sanghera made up the rest of the bowling attack, Sam having the only other success, but both suffering from the onslaught of the final overs. Glenpark were left with a tough target of 152.

In response Dave started well with a couple of early boundaries, but was bizarrely run out when his opening partner Sam misheard the call of “wait”. After that the innings never really got going, reduced to 38 for five in the eighth over. Peter Hempsey and Kevin Flack tried to bring some dignity to proceedings and, after Peter’s departure, Jeeta Singh showed the batting prowess demonstrated last season – but it was all too little too late as the innings closed well in arrears.

Glenpark now need to win their remaining three matches to give themselves a chance of progressing to the next round. On Saturday they play hosts to Cambusdoon in the SNCL Reserve League – weather permitting!
