Ferguslie | 71 for 9 | MI Robertson 4 for 20, MR Sekhoto 3 for 25 |
Greenock 1st XI | 74 for 6 | RD Berrington 34; AG Preston-Jones 3 for 18 |
Greenock defeated near neighbours Ferguslie by four 4 wickets in a low scoring West League Cup match at Glenpark on Wednesday evening played in damp, cold and overcast conditions.
Ferguslie won the toss and batted first but made a poor start and were in fairly desperate trouble at 23 for 6 after 10 overs. Michael English with 23 runs and overseas amateur Michael Homewood with 16 not out, helped the Paisley side make a decent recovery which took their score to 71 for the loss of 9 wickets when the innings closed after the allotted 18 overs.
Mark Robertson had another good game with the ball taking four wickets for just 20 runs from his 5 overs. Pro Mpho Sekhoto also did well, picking up three wickets for 25 runs while Richie Berrington bowled 3 overs taking 1 wicket for 8 runs. There was also one run out.
Richie Berrington and Neil Flack opened the innings for Greenock and made a fine start putting on 43 runs before the latter was bowled by McAlister. Berrington looked in a hurry to finish the match hitting four 4’s and one 6 in his innings of 34 runs before being bowled by Ferguslie pro Malcolm Waller.
Greenock scored the winning runs with the first ball of the fourteenth over having stuttered a little in the closing stages as the final few runs were being scored. Alistair Preston-Jones with 3 wickets for 18 runs and Malcolm Waller with 2 for 14 were Ferguslie’s two top performers with the ball.
This was a good win for a Greenock side missing several usual 1st XI players and the result means that the side has now won both of their West League Cup sectional matches played so far. Next up in this competition is a home fixture against Kelburne on Wednesday 30 May.
