1st XI rained off at New Anniesland
Glasgow Accies v Greenock 1st XI
WDCU Premiership Two
Saturday 20th July 2024
Glasgow Accies | 186 | R Andrew 31; A Mansoor 3 for 29 |
Greenock 1st XI |
The 1st XI's match on Saturday at New Anniesland in Glasgow against Glasgow Accies was abandoned following the completion of the Accies innings due to wet weather. The rain which moved in from the Atlantic in the mid-afternoon caused all cricket in the west to be similarly affected.
Knowing that rain would move in during the afternoon, the 1st XI inserted the home side when the pre-match coin toss landed in their favour. The tactic was to try and bowl Accies out quickly and then score the runs to win the match before the rains arrived. It did not work out that way.
Accies began confidently with Holloway hitting the first ball of the innings to the boundary and by the end of the first six overs the Glasgow side had twenty runs on the scoreboard. But having scored 16 runs himself, opening bat Holloway became the first wicket of the afternoon thanks to a good catch by Chirag Pandher.
A second wicket stand of 25 runs between opener Nicholas and new batsman Brown showed that Accies would not be easily swept aside. And further good partnerships for the third and fourth wicket took the New Anniesland team to 94 for 4 at just a little more than half way through the innings.
So any chance of the 1st XI getting the match completed before the rains arrived was disappearing with each over bowled. And Accies continued to bat on with purpose as runs piled up through to just one ball short of the end of their 50 over innings when their last wicket fell with the score on 186.
Accies' end of innings score was their highest of the season, and the 1st XI would have been disappointed to allow so many runs to have been scored having had the home side 99 for 6 after 32 overs. However, it was all in vain for Accies as the match was abandoned without any further play after the tea interval.
Richard Andrew, coming in at number 8 in the Accies batting order, was their top scorer with 31 runs. And with Farhan Shah scoring 23 runs as their number 9 batsman, the bowlers were unable to close out the home side's innings as quickly as had been hoped.
Ali Mansoor with 3 for 29 in his 10 overs was the most successful bowler. Four others picked up one wicket and Ewan Stewart got 2 for 31 from his 7 overs.
For the team, the outcome of the afternoon was very frustrating as this was a match which had been targeted for a win to lift the team up the league table. Now the side must look to the last six league fixtures to gain a number of wins which will lead to a comfortable position in the league table.
