The 1st XI were overwhelmed by Dumfries on Saturday, losing by 185 runs, in a match which laid bare the team's shortcomings.

Toby Matthews won the toss, the fifth time in a row that a home skipper has done that, and elected to bowl first, Cammy Calder and Mahmood Ahmadzai sharing the new ball. There was an early success for the team when Osmond was run out for 7 with the score on 13.

That was the only success for some time as Munro Cubbon and Lachlan Friend got on top of the home attack. It took until the 21st over before the bowlers made the breakthrough when Friend was trapped lbw by the skipper. Cubbon fell in the next over for 45, bowled by Sean Fischer-Keogh, and the bowlers sensed an opportunity to get back into the match.

Matthews bowled a really tight spell and he claimed the next two wickets, having the younger Corbett-Byers caught by Stewart and then Jabarkhil was held by Pandher. Dumfries had fallen to 134 for 5 in the 32nd over and the innings was in the balance.

With Matthews bowled out, having taken 3 for 23 in his 10 overs, the shackles on the batsmen were loosened somewhat. The number four batsman, Billy Morgan, was still there and together with Reynolds-Lewis, put on 48 runs for the 6th wicket before the latter was dismissed by the Ahmadzai brothers, Mahmood taking the catch off his brother Mubi's bowling.

Enter the veteran Stuart Corbett-Byers. With just over 6 overs left of the innings, he took the game away from the 1st XI with an aggressive knock, hitting seven boundaries in his innings of 41 off 23 balls, which ended with the penultimate ball of the innings when he was run out attempting an unlikely second run to try to keep the strike. Together with Morgan, who remained undefeated on 47, he had taken the Dumfries total to an imposing 253 for 7.

The team needed a solid start if they were to challenge that total but with just the third legitimate ball of their innings, Fischer-Keogh was caught behind off Cubbon's bowling, having just hit the previous ball for four. Worse was to follow in Cubbon's next over when Matthews was caught at first slip by Jabarkhil.

Two overs later and Adam McGuirk was back in the pavilion, having been run out without scoring and the innings was in tatters at 17 for 3. Calder was then bowled by Osmond for 8 and Pandher was another who failed to trouble the scorers, bowled by Cubbon at the start of the 9th over.

While all this was happening, Usman Mansoor was occupying the other end but his determined innings ended in Cubbon's sixth over, when he was caught for 10, having faced 26 balls for that score.

The rest of the batting line-up put up little resistance with only Mubi Ahmadzai staying any length of time, scoring 14, made off 29 balls, and the end came at the start of the 20th over when Greg McDougall was bowled by McGrath with the total on 68. Cubbon with 4 for 22 and McGrath 4 for 20 were the bowlers who did the damage for Dumfries.

The bald statistics of the innings do not make for pretty reading. Only two batsmen in double figures, extras contributed 18 of the 68 runs and Dumfries required only 115 balls to polish off the innings.

Results elsewhere in the division did not go the team's way. There are five teams locked in the relegation battle with the 1st XI now in 8th place, just behind Mearns and Helensburgh. Next Saturday sees 9th placed East Kilbride at Glenpark which is now a vital game for the home team. They need to put this game behind them, and regroup to overcome EK. Occupying the crease for the full number of overs would be a good place to start.
