Greenock Cricket Club
Glenpark, Brisbane Street, Greenock, PA16 8NY
Founded 1862
The 1st XI play their final warm-up matches at Glenpark this weekend before the league season begins in earnest next weekend.
On Saturday, newly promoted Helensburgh are the opposition. And leading the side from across the Clyde will be former Greenock opening bowler Gregor Chambers who will be looking to test out his side against his former team mates. But the Glenpark men will be keen to make sure they put in a solid performance and get the plaudits at the end of the match.
The two teams will meet each other later in the season as Helensburgh had a fine season in 2024 gaining promotion from WDCU Premiership Three into Premiership Two. The first of those league encounters will come towards the end of June at Glenpark with the return match at Helensburgh for the second last match of the league programme coming at the end of August.
A strong team will be fielded with both of the Club's overseas amateurs making their first appearance at Glenpark after arriving from Brisbane on Thursday afternoon.
The two Aussies, Callum Henry, a wicketkeeper and opening batsman and Will Jenkins, a pace bowler and middle order bat, will be important players for the team during the season and have been brought to the Club through the assistance of former Club professional Peter Clifford who lives and coaches in the Brisbane area of Australia.
On Sunday, regular pre-season visitors, Hillhead, make the journey to Glenpark from the West End of Glasgow. The Hughenden team had a miserable season in 2024 which ended in relegation to the WDCU Premiership Three. But they will be keen to make a positive start to the 2025 season and then be challenging in their league programme with the aim of returning once again to Premiership Two.
A number of changes will be made to the team for this match which allows for several players to get some match practice before the start of the league season next Saturday when Kilmarnock will be the visitors to Glenpark.
Both games are scheduled to start at 12 noon.
