Greenock 1st XI defeated Dunfermline & Carnegie by 5 wickets
The 1st XI rounded off a successful weekend of competitive cricket with a fine five wicket win over Dunfermline & Carnegie in a quarter-final match of the Cricket Scotland Challenge Cup at Glenpark on Sunday afternoon.
The East League side arrived at Glenpark having won nine out of ten league matches and sitting at the top of the ESCA Division 2. And the team from Dunfermline made an immediate impact with openers Shafiq and Amjad each scoring two boundaries off the first two overs.
But Shafiq failed to add any more runs to his own score before being bowled by Fahim Dinarkheil for 8 runs midway through the third over.
Amjad and Vasu Reddy then settled in to a promising partnership and added a further 30 runs before opener Amjad was bowled by Chirag Pandher for 16 runs.
Thereafter the Dunfermline & Carnegie side lost its way with wickets tumbling regularly until the team was bowled out for a lowly 75 runs.
Nikhil Kadyan with 3 for 14 and Chirag Pandher 3 for 13 were the principal architects of the Fife side's collapse.
But the 1st XI did not have it all their own way, and received a couple early shocks when, firstly, Saturday centurion Callum Henry was dismissed with the last ball of the very first over having scored just one run. And then team captain Aryan Sanghera was run out with the score on just 8 runs attempting a quick single.
A third wicket went down on 24 when Nikhil Kadyan was bowled by Amjad for 10 runs.
But a 31 runs partnership by Harry Briggs and Cammy Calder took Greenock to within 20 runs of victory. However, although both Briggs (17) and Calder (27) lost their wickets before the winning runs were scored, their partnership had eased the Glenparkers close to the winning line which duly was achieved with the first ball of the 27th over.
The semi-final of the CS Challenge Cup will take place at Glenpark on Sunday 27 July when Strathmore Cricket Club willprovide the opposition.
