Greenock Cricket Club runs a well-organised and popular Junior section for children, both boys and girls, from the age of 8 up to 18.
The youngest children, ie those between the ages of 8 and 10, start off with Kwik Cricket. This teaches boys and girls the rudiments of the game but the objective at the same time is to have fun. It is played with a softer, yellow ball as opposed to the hard, red ball used in proper cricket. Everyone gets a chance to bat and bowl, there is no way that just a few can monopolise the game. All of this makes it a great way to learn the fun of cricket.
During the summer, a number of Kwik Cricket festivals are held, mainly within the Glasgow and Paisley areas, and there is also a National tournament, in which the Club has regularly qualified for the Scottish finals.
The section fields four under-aged teams in the Western District Junior Leagues. The Under 11s and Under 15s play their games on a Friday evening against other clubs in the Paisley, Glasgow and Ayrshire areas. The Under 13s do the same but on a Monday evening whilst the Under-18s play cup-ties on selected evenings.
Practice and coaching sessions for all age groups are all important and these take place on Tuesdays, 4.30pm to 6.00pm for those of 12 to 18 years of age. Those of 8 to 11 years of age attend practice on Wednesdays from 6.00pm to 7.30pm. The Under 18s will also be able to attend the Senior training sessions which are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
The cost of Membership is £47, irrespective of age. Any boy or girl who has paid a Junior hockey subscription will not be charged an additional fee for playing cricket.
Anyone wishing to try the game or join the section should get in contact with Kevin Flack, the Junior Convenor, at the number listed above.
