Glenpark XI start season with a bang

Glenpark XI vs Blackhill
WDCU Championship Three
Saturday 29th April 2023

Blackhill 23
Glenpark XI 25 for 2

Although delighted to start with an emphatic win, it was not a very competitive opener to Glenpark's 2023 season. Visitors Blackhill, a team newly formed from the players of Helensburgh and Vale of Leven, were unable to field a full team and, having been put in to bat it was destined to be a short game. That being said, it was an opportunity for players new to the club to make an impact, and they didn't disappoint.

The home team started out with a blend of old and new, veteran Dave Sharma opening the bowling with debutant Inam Khan. Straight away they troubled the batsmen and it wasn't long before the two players combined for the first wicket, Inam taking a catch off Dave at point.

The openers took two wickets apiece to clear the top order, allowing captain Eddie Ahmad to give other newcomers Muhibullah Ahmadzai and Uday Varma a chance to show what they could do. Muhib was finding it hard to control some prodigious away swing, but fared better bowling round the wicket, forcing a catch; soon after following up with a run out. Uday also thought he had success, but having hit the stumps the delivery was deemed a no-ball.

The skipper then brought himself on to finish the innings, which closed on a lowly 23.

In reply Eddie Ahmad again looked to blood the new players, Asad Farooq, having already impressed with two catches, opening with Sahil Safi. Obviously, there was little pressure and the runs were knocked off with the loss of two wickets, Asad being bowled, and perhaps injuring himself in the event, and Hamid Safi falling to an excellent caught and bowled. Muhibullah remained not out with Sahil at the end.
