Glenpark XI vs Milngavie 2nd XI
WDCU Championship Three
Saturday 19th August 2023
Glenpark XI | 95 | |
Milngavie 2nd XI | 96 for 8 | N Nagaraju 3 for 19, A Afzal 3 for 30 |
For the second week running the Glenpark XI managed to complete their match against the odds, given the inclement weather. Unfortunately they also again failed to win the game. The overs were reduced to 35 per innings and the home team batted first, and it wasn't long before they were feeling the rain should have lasted longer!
All the top five batsmen failed, to leave the side reeling on 22 for 5, thankfully the lower order fared better, with some reaching double figures - but the last wicket fell with a disappointing total of 95, and the visitors were confident of a win.
With regular keeper, Sudeep Chaudhary, unavailable, Dave Sharma took the gloves, and it was Nagendra Varga and Muhiballah Ahmadzai who opened the bowling. They both achieved prodigious swing and had the Milngavie batters in a lot of trouble. It was no surprise when Naga broke through with an LBW. Two further wickets to Naga, and one to Muhib courtesy of a fabulous catch by Eddie Ahmad, and Glenpark were back in the game.
Adnan Afzal joined the attack, and found the same movement to make further breakthroughs and, with Muhib returning to take another wicket, the opposition were eight down with still more than twenty runs to get. Unfortunately the bowlers had no further success and Glenpark were unable to pull off an unlikely win. It was a great effort, and may have succeeded had some decisions gone their way and a couple of catches held.
So the season ends, and the team should be proud of their performances. They won the games they were expected to, and pushed some of the higher placed teams hard; unlucky not to come away with a win on several occasions. With some of the younger players showing great promise, it is hoped that next season will go even better. Until then, winter well!
